OutClimb Cancer by raising funds to support cancer research at the HCI

Just over 7 years ago, I became involved with the Climb at the Wells Fargo Center. The first year I participated as an individual climber before helping create a team with friends from work--the Wells Fargo Stair Steppers--for the last 6 years. Climbing the Wells Fargo Center has become a tradition that combines two of my favorite activities, running and community service. In addition, the Climb changed my life in that I first met my sweet wife, Beth, when she volunteered at the stair climb in 2012. Nowadays, along with a group of our best friends, we volunteer to organize the Climb--the OutClimb Cancer Challenge--for the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.

I became involved with running as a result of my former junior high school science teacher and family friend, Mrs. Patty Spring passing away due to breast cancer. Mrs. Spring was a passionate runner. Regardless of the weather, I remember always seeing Mrs. Spring running around the Holladay and East Mill Creek neighborhoods of Salt Lake City. This amazed me and I could never understand how someone could run so much (e.g., in basketball, the coach punishes the team in practice by making them run). Due to her death, as my own tribute to Mrs. Spring, I trained for over a year to run the 2006 Ogden Marathon. Since I did not understand how someone could run so much, when I commenced running, it was going to be one marathon and done for me. At least this was the plan. Needless to say, life rarely goes as planned. I discovered all the things that Mrs. Spring must have loved about running; including, but not limited to: the challenge, friends, community spirit, and amazing sense of accomplishment. Cancer took an amazing person, teacher, and friend from this world, but Mrs. Springís dedication to education and running has made me a better person. Since I cannot directly repay her, I continue to pay it forward by running (Salt Lake, Des News Marathons along with the OutClimb Cancer Challenge, Wasatch Back Relay, and Coeur díAlene Ironman 70.3 in 2017) and supporting such terrific causes as the Huntsman Cancer Foundation.

Iím most passionate about this cause due to the amazing research and progress being made the Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI); especially in cancer genetics. In addition, the people that work and volunteer for HCI are The Best! If you are able to help pay it forward (no matter how big or small, 100% goes to cancer research), please make a donation today. Thanks for the support and Happy Running!--John Rosswog
